Mrs. Evelyn A. Hopkins passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the St Mary's Hospice House, in Athens. Evelyn was born July 28, 1937 in Boston, MA. the daughter of John F. Stone and Evelyn A. Harlow. She was united in marriage to Laverne B. Hopkins III on June 20, 1953 in Yuma, AZ.
As a Military wife, she held down the home front while her husband fought in the Korean and Viet Nam wars. She waited for her husband to return while working and being a loving, supportive Mother. They found themselves in...

Mrs. Evelyn A. Hopkins passed away Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the St Mary's Hospice House, in Athens. Evelyn was born July 28, 1937 in Boston, MA. the daughter of John F. Stone and Evelyn A. Harlow. She was united in marriage to Laverne B. Hopkins III on June 20, 1953 in Yuma, AZ.
As a Military wife, she held down the home front while her husband fought in the Korean and Viet Nam wars. She waited for her husband to return while working and being a loving, supportive Mother. They found themselves in many parts if the world including Germany and Panama. Early in Evelyn's life while living in Fort Ord, CA near Monterey, CA she was 'discovered' due to her beauty and likeness to Elizabeth Taylor and cast as her stand-in for the movie 'The Sand Piper' in 1965. She settled in Athens in 1993.
Evelyn loved and adored her family and found great joy in being with her husband and being active in her grandchildren's lives.
She is preceded in death by her devoted husband of 55 years and her brothers and sisters: Glenn, Mike, Jeanne and Jessie.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters: Russell, Marilyn, Josie and Gloria; her children and their spouses Deborah Williams (Athens, GA), John Hopkins (Walloon Lake, MI), Tracey Kelly (Roseville, CA), and Peggy Nunes (Santa Cruz, CA); 9 grandchildren: Jessica Helwig, Danielle Alvarez, Michael Williams, Christopher Williams, Ryan Kelly, Bryce Nunes, Shyla Nunes, Stephanie Lufholm, and Michelle English; and 10 great-grandchildren: Sean and Nate Williams, Bailey and Ryleigh Helwig, Alex Alvarez, Jayden and Skylar Hawkins, Taylor and Jake Lufholm, and Sydney English.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Walk to End Alzheimer's-Athens, ACT.ALZ.ORG, or 41 Perimeter Circle East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA, 30346, toward finding a cure for Alzheimer's.
Private Graveside services will be held at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
