Charles Richard Berry, 89, of Athens, Georgia, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016. He was the son of Homer Hays and Fanny Bell Clowser of Glenville, WV. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Craig Berry; two sons, Thomas M. (Shirley) of Athens and Joseph W. (Lynn) of Jeffersonton, VA; three grandchildren, Jacob M., Kathryn E. and Harrison C.; and two great-grandsons, Marshall L. and Killian C.

Charles served in the US Navy at the end of World War II and in the US Army during the Korean War. After earning a doctorate...

Charles Richard Berry, 89, of Athens, Georgia, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2016. He was the son of Homer Hays and Fanny Bell Clowser of Glenville, WV. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Craig Berry; two sons, Thomas M. (Shirley) of Athens and Joseph W. (Lynn) of Jeffersonton, VA; three grandchildren, Jacob M., Kathryn E. and Harrison C.; and two great-grandsons, Marshall L. and Killian C.

Charles served in the US Navy at the end of World War II and in the US Army during the Korean War. After earning a doctorate in plant pathology at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, he joined the USDA-Forest Service until his retirement in 1988. He worked at the Forest Service Southeastern Station in Asheville, NC prior to transferring to Athens in 1971.

He was a longtime member of Young Harris United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He enjoyed playing the guitar, hunting, woodworking, RVing and sailing.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 28 at 11 a.m. at Bernstein Funeral Home with Reverend David Wofford officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
